FASD Task Force Meeting Minutes 11/4/09
Attendance: Madaline Journey-Lynn, Joe Medours, Maria Jocson, Shirley Dove, Tony Anderson, Teresa Anderson, Tim Derning, Eva Carner, Greg DiGere
FASD Task Force Goals – Select Committee occurring – Beall, explore ways in which the TF can influence Select Committee
MCAH can make recommendations to TF requested
Work with Medical Board/ Malpractice
Review Medical Board policy on alcohol consumption during pregnancy and consequences for doctors that say it is okay
Eva – reports 2008 ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) issued a no alcohol advisory for women during pregnancy
TF members to meet with Select Committee – Parents/self-advocates, Tony, Teresa, Greg, Shirley
Issues to might be topics of discussion for Beall’s Select Committee
Alcohol Mitigation Fee – existing Bill 1019
Screening Reimbursement – existing Bill 217
Medical Board Policy
Medical School Curriculum/ Professional Licensing
Joe – expressed interest in getting women with disabilities information on the dangers of prenatal exposure to alcohol, wants to share information with his chapters and explore ways People First can be active in the TF
FASD Fact Sheet and Brochure
Maria and Eva sent final draft to The Arc of California, Tony agreed to have it printed by December
Billy Edwards is a public Defender in L.A. County working on criminal justice issues related to FASD, he is on the editorial board for The Journal of Psychiatry and Law, request put out for articles for a special issue on FASD.
Greg recommends approaching to Senate Office of Research to inquire about
1) Percent of people in the Corrections System with FASD and the associated costs
2) Medical Board consequences/enforcement for doctors that say it is okay to drink alcohol during pregnancy given that it goes against the surgeon generals warning/ what other states are doing about it
